My classes are based on three underlying aims.
The class is designed to be inclusive. Yoga postures are adjusted to the individual not the other way around. Each of us has a unique body that moves or does not move in certain ways. Yoga can be modified to include each and everyone of us.
The class is approached to be mindful. By thinking about what we are doing with our body we shut out the other thoughts that intrude. Yoga is not an exercise program that requires endless repetitions performed without thought. Yoga is establishing a connection and awareness with our bodies.
The class is aimed at being restorative. Through the exercises, yoga in the long run, can help to re-establish strength and flexibility back into the body. This promotes health and improves our joy of living.
Gentle Chair Yoga – Thursdays from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
All yoga is flexible. But chair yoga is perhaps the most reachable for the widest population. It can be a good starting point for someone that has never done yoga. It can be used as a re-entry to yoga after an injury or a long layoff from practice. It is excellent for those that have concerns for getting down to or up from the floor. The yoga can be in a seated posture the entire time or the chair can be just a prop for entering comfortably and steadily into the various postures both standing and partially seated.
Chair yoga can be the start and the end of your practice or, as strength and confidence is achieved one can move to other forms of yoga. Some students do both. Also it is good to point out that chair practice teaches postures that would be beneficial to perform at work on a break easing the tensions of a desk bound job.
In short, “Chair practice is for all!”
